Prof. James Biu Kung’u is a Professor of Landscape Restoration and Climate Change in the Department of Environmental Sciences and Education, School of Environmental Studies, Kenyatta University. He holds a PhD (Silviculture and Forest Influences) and a Msc  (Silviculture and Forest Influences) degrees from the University of the Philippines Los Baňos and a Bachelor of Science (Forestry) from Moi University, Kenya. Prof. Kung’u is the acting Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration) from 24^th May 2021. He serves also as Director, Mama Ngina University College and Interim Executive Secretary, African Network for Agriculture, Agroforestry and Natural Resources Education (ANAFE). He has also served as the Director, Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Centre, Kenyatta University. Between 2011 and 2018, Prof. Kung’u served as the Dean School of Environmental Studies and from 2008 to 2011 as the Chairman, Department of Environmental Sciences.  He has also previously served as the Chairman, East and Central Africa Regional Network for African Network for Agriculture, Agroforestry and Natural Resource Education and a Board member of Africa Network for Agriculture, Agroforestry and Natural Resources Education Network (ANAFE) where he was the Chair for Finance and Administration. Prof. Kung’u had also served in the Inter-university Council of East Africa committee for the theme on Agriculture and Forestry. He has published widely and supervised many PhDs and Masters’ students. His main area of research interest has been on use of perennial plants for adaptation and mitigation to climate change, climate change and food security, Ecosystem Based Disaster Risks Reduction (Eco-DRR), helping small scale tree farmers participate in carbon trade, Reduced Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+), Domestication of indigenous trees, Community participation in natural resource management and Social and Environmental Impacts Assessment. Prof. Kung’u has been presenting his research findings in many national and international conferences and has participated in writing many research and development proposals, which have been funded by national and international organizations. He has also spearheaded the development of a number of international collaborations (MOUs) with many universities in Africa, Europe, Asia and Americas. He is an external examiner in four Kenyan universities and universities in Sudan, Zambia and Malawi. Prof. Kung’u is a member of African Forestry Forum, Forestry Society of Kenya, Association of East Africa Environmental Impact Assessment, African Network of Tropical Soil Biology and Fertility, and a resource person for the Kenya Commission for University Education.
