Message from the Chairman:
Welcome and thank you for taking time to visit the Environmental Education webpage.
The environment as a life support system is a key determinant of human well-being. For a long time, the study of environmental questions have often ignored the roles communities play in achieving environmental suitability. Participation of communities in developing plans and strategies for achieving environmental sustainability is very important. However the achievement of environmental sustainability also requires the synergies of various stakeholders including governments, development agencies, and educational institutions such as universities. When these stakeholders combine their efforts with those of local communities resident in or near various ecosystems, environmental conservation goals and sustainability can easily be achieved. Educational institution plays a critical role in this environmental conservation equation especially in regard to creating the required expertise through training and capacity building for various professionals. This is the reasoning behind the establishment of the Department of Environmental Studies and Community Development within the School of Environmental Studies at Kenyatta University. The department runs currently runs three programmes to achieve this goal. The programmes are
i) Bachelor of Environmental Studies and Community Development.
ii) Master of Environmental Studies and Community Development and
iii) PhD in Environmental Studies and Community Development.
The department was established to developed capacity in professionals who would be capable of synchronizing the problem challenges posed by environmental and development changes globally, nationally and at the community level. The department therefore meets a key training gap for professionals who can make decisions and come up with interventions that cuts across environmental and development challenges facing society.
To train professionals who are capable of looking for solution to the various environmental and development challenges facing society through imparting the necessary knowledge and skills necessary for creation of sustainable community development.
i). To equip students with the necessary tools and techniques of investigating and understanding the relationships between environment and development so as to contribute to informed decision-making towards sustainable community livelihoods.
ii). To generate the necessary knowledge on the impacts of development on the environment and vice versa so as to encourage harmonious interactions between humans and their environment.
ii). To produce professionals and technocrats capable of spearheading sustainable development by focusing on communities and the environment as critical national resources.
The Department has an ongoing MOU with Animal Protection Society formerly World Society for Protection of Animals. In the process of establishing MOU’s with Green Africa and NEMA.
Students of environmental education have employment opportunities in environmental departments of various government Ministries and Parastatals, Private Sector, Civil society and in Private Consultancy. They play a leading role in initiating environmental programmes projects and creating environmental awareness, ensuring social organizational environmental compliance and social responsibility.
The department is currently coordinating on behalf of Kenyatta University, the Education for Sustainable Development in Africa (ESDA) programme. This is a collaborative programme facilitated by the United Nations University. Other partners include UN Habitat, UNEP, European Universities and ESDA partnering African universities.
The programme aims at initiating a New Masters Programme is Sustainable Urban Development (ESDA – SUD) by 2013. This programme implementation is expected to be largely field-based employing problem solving instruction and should promote research targeting cross-cutting issues and concerns in sustainable development.
The Department of Environmental Education has linkages with the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources under a project titled “Environmental Awareness and Management at Kenyatta University and its environs” (EAMKUE) which is implemented through COEP.
Through this project efforts have been made to clean up Kahawa River (Marengeta) as well as planting indigenous trees along its course.
The department has also worked closely with UNEP in developing a Masters programme on Climate Change and Sustainability. The programme has currently over 20 students.
The National Council on Science and Technology also collaborates with the department through supporting two PhD students on Climate Change and Indigenous Biodiversity. The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) has also supported the research aspect of the department by funding one Master student. The department welcomes new partners in supporting research work by staff and students.

The department also offers a course in EEN 100 – Introduction to Environmental Education which is mandatory for all students taking a Bachelors degree in education.
Mission of the Programmes
This Environmental Education programme intends to equip learners with knowledge and skills to enhance capacity in communication, education and public awareness for attitude change and participation in environmental sustainability at both formal and non-formal sectors.
Objectives of the Programme
Equip learners with critical understanding of the perspectives of environmental education and sustainability
- Equip learners with skills necessary to develop and research environmental issues using diverse environmental learning methods and strategies.
- To enable learners to understand their roles as facilitators of learning and how to use diverse methods and strategies in environmental practice.
- To build capacity among learners so as to provide leadership on environmental concerns that face societies.
